The Archaeology Summer Program is a special program offered once a year to youth in the greater Albuquerque area by Sandia Ranger District staff and volunteers. This week-long program is intended to engage our youth in the outdoors and foster an appreciation for the rich natural and cultural resources that are in our backyards. The funding generated from the camp is collected by Friends of Sandia Mountains and used to help reinvest in the preservation/protection/interpretation of this important Tiwa cultural and historic site and in the stewardship of the Sandia Mountains.
Throughout the week, we provide participants with an introduction to the field/lab methods and concepts for how archaeologists study and interpret past human culture. While they receive a lot of information, it is incredibly hands-on, with each activity designed to foster active learning and engagement.
A Fun Time Was Had By All at the 2026 Camp!
August 4, 2026 – Sandra Arazi-Coambs, Sandia/Mountainair Zone Archaeologist, sent the following message to parents of participants: I wanted to thank everyone for attending the 2026 Tijeras Pueblo Archaeological Summer Program. This was a great year with an amazing group of kids! I really enjoyed working with this group. They brought a lot of enthusiasm, inquisitiveness, and good energy! I hope that they enjoyed the week and benefited from some of the experiences.
I will be sending out a few more photos in the next couple of emails. When you get a chance, please respond back with the feedback form so we can make some improvements for next year!
