The broken fragments of pottery (potsherds, or just sherds) that are so abundant on Ancestral Pueblo sites in the Southwest may at first glance appear as useless bits of trash. Not for archaeologists! For us, pot sherds are a valuable source of information about how people lived in the past.

September 2, 2026 – Judith A. Habicht-Mauche wrote: I am so excited that Sandra has been able to arrange a tour of the Tijeras Pueblo collections at the Maxwell! If you are able, please do attend that event; I know that you will all enjoy it. What a special treat to see how the UNM field school collections are being cared for at the Hibben Center and get up close and personal with some of our very special glaze ware pots! Ask them to show you the one with the pigments smeared all over it–my personal favorite.
I will try to make it to the FOSM meeting at the Museum on Oct 6 and will be there to help out with the ASM tour. Dr.Eckert will be in Santa Fe this weekend and I will confer with her about group size, expectations, etc. I will also see some of you at the Museum Exhibits Committee meeting next week to talk about trail signage and Level 2 training agenda and content.
